Adam Barthel Gottsleben
(1836-1911)

Farmer in Saint Clair County, Michigan

One of the most prosperous farmers of Greenwood township is Adam Gottsleben, who was born in Hesse, Prussian, August 6, 1836, a son of Johan Klaus and Barbara Gottsleben, who has a family of four children, viz: 1) Adam, whose name opens this record; 2) Catherine, widow of John Ripple, lives in Pennsylvania, and is the mother of six children; 3) Jacob lives in Canada and is married to Elizabeth Kimball, who has borne him four children; 4) Alice is the wife of Elias Mack, of northwest Canada, and has three children. Johan Klaus Gottsleben, father of the above family, was a mason and weaver, passed all his life in Germany and died a member of the German Reformed church. His widow came to the United States in her latter days and located in Pennsylvania, but afterwards removed to Canada, where she died in 1872, also in the faith of the German Reformed church.

Adam Gottsleben, when about eighteen years of age, migrated from Germany to Canada and for five years worked on a farm; he next went to Union county, Pennsylvania, and worked out at farm labor until May, 1861, when he enlisted in Company B, Sixth Pennsylvania Reserve Volunteers, was detailed to hospital duty, and continued with the army in field hospitals until 1864. He was mustered out at Harrisburg, having been honorably discharged, and for which service he receives suitable recognition through a pension.

Mr. Gottsleben, after leaving the army, returned to Union county, where he worked on a farm for two years, then purchased a farm in Snyder county, on which he resided until the ‘seventies, when he went to Canada, where he lived five years. March 4, 1881, he came to Michigan and bought forty acres of cleared land in section 11, Greenwood township, built a good dwelling and substantial barn, and later added forty acres to his original purchase.

Mr. Gottsleben was joined in marriage December 18, 1866, with Miss Anna Schill, a native of the same province as himself. They have nine children, who were born in the following order: Elizabeth, who is the wife of Jacob Zuelch, lives on a farm in Greenwood township; John Henry, who died December 26, 1902, in his thirty-third year, had lived at home; Anna, wife of Noah Bean, of Greenwood; George, who married Ada Preston; Matilda, William, Charles, Rosa and Earnest, all under the parental roof. Mr. and Mrs. Gottsleben and elder children are members of the Evangelical Association, in which they take an active interest and to the support of which they liberally contribute. In politics Mr. Gottsleben is a Republican, under the auspices of which party he has held the position of school director thirteen years.

As a farmer, Mr. Gottsleben raises mixed crops, such as hay, wheat, corn and oats, a considerable quantity of which he disposes of by sale, and the remainder of which he feeds to his stock, which comprises high-grade cattle, horses and hogs, in the breeding of which he has been very successful. He has been a hard-working man all his life, notwithstanding the fact that he is now rewarded for his labors with a comfortable home and a profitable farm, on which he can implicitly rely for support the remainder of his days. He may truly be termed a "self-made" man, and his habits of industry still cling to him, having become to him a sort of "second nature". He has won for himself the warm regard of all his fellow citizens for the reason that he was never known to violate his word, and honest, coupled with industry and economy, will ever secure the respect of all.

Diary (1866-1877) of Adam Barthel Gottsleben

Diary (translated from German into English):

Page 1: January 1st 1866 - Again one year has come to an end, a year which included many glad, but also many sad hours. This is the first New Year out of four that again brings peace. How many friends and comrades have given their lives during these four elapsed years? How many a mother weeps over a son who fell on the battle field? How many widows mourn the death of their husbands? How many children weep for the never-returning father? The land is full of mourning and woe, but You, Oh, Heavenly Father have again delivered us from the horrors of war. May then this newly begun year also end in peace and quiet.

Page 2: Many still are in the land of the living, but many will also leave this earthly vale. Who will be the next, who will be called into eternity? Will I live to see of this year or is the hour of my departure not far off? This is down to you alone, Oh, God, as you will, so shall it be. Thy will be done, you lead all for the best. Let me walk in the way of salvation, strengthen my belief, lead me in the right way, let me not waver from the safe way, abide with us and me now and forever, God my King, Jesus my comfort, 1st your Holy Ghost rest upon me until the end.

Page 3: This is my wish and my plea, therein may God side with me. Oh, Jesus, ever direct my thoughts toward the True and to the Good. Where I am and what I do - God, my Father, watches me.

Page 24: It is the 9th of August. Today I begin my 31 year. These last thirty years have I lived through God’s grace. Many dangers threatened me, but you, Oh, Gracious God, have diverted them and I commend myself to your protection, guide and direct me, and let me ever strive to do thy will and do right by everyone, let me do as your commandment demands of me. What worth do earthly goods have with their deceit and injustice? Oh, let me not seek after that, rather ever after the Heavenly good and not the earthly.

Page 98: January 1st 1877 - Again a new year has begun. May also, in this year new blessings accompany us and may the Lord so lead and guide us that we may again gain a new home with His Council and Will. He knows best what is best for us. Therefore, may all come to pass according to His will and may the Lord ever keep us in good health until our end and then lead us and all His children into eternal rest and glory forever, in the land of Peace and Joy. God grant this for Jesus sake. Amen.

Highlights of Charles Gottsleben's life as remembered by daughter Beulah: "29 Apr 1887, Charlie, (Charles) was born in Greenwood Township, Yale, Michigan in log cabin on farm on Jeddo Road befor homestead was built in April 1890. - Education: went through 8th grade, then worked on farm at homestead on Jeddo Road. At age 16 felt he was called to preach but his sister Rose was at school in Big Rapids to become school teacher and brother Will was at bible school to become a preacher and there was not enough money to send Charlie to bible school also. In later years he felt he did not prosper because he didn't follow God's calling. Charlie meant Mabel Mary Carl at Methodist church on Jeddo and Fargo Road. They dated for 7 years and since Charlie lived in Yale and Mabel in Avoca, they corrsponded by letters and post cards until they married 28 Feb 1912. They spent their honeymoon in Grand Rapids and Vassor Michigan. They received a wedding gift of a Cherry wood box from Charlie's Uncle. The box was later given to his daughter Beulah and now her daughter Mary Ann Bankson Clinton has it proudly displayed and will pass it on to her children. After returning from their honeymoon they lived at old homestead on Jeddo Road where they shared the house with Charlie's mother Anna who had her own quarters on one side of the house. 1912-1922 Charlie and Mabel had 4 children while living at old homestead. Thelma born in 1912, Beulah in 1913, Baby Carl 1 Jan 1915 and died 16 Feb 1915, and William in 1920. 29 Jan 1922 the homestead burned to ground. Mother Anna went to live with daughter Tillie and Charlie, Mabel and children moved to Port Huron. It was rebuilt 1923-1924 by Charlie's brothers Ernest and Will for mother Anna and sister Rose. Anna lived there until she died in 1927. Rose lived there until she had a nervous breakdown in 1933 and moved to Goodles infirmary in Goodles, Mich. 1922-1936 Charlie and family moved several times in Port Huron area and had 2 more children, Glen in April 1922 and Marion April 1928. 18 Dec 1933 Charlie's wife Mabel died after a hit and run accident while walking home from church at 9:30 at night with 2 sons Glen and William. They were living on Bonisteel Road at the time. After Mabel's death Marion and Glen went to live with sister Beulah and family. Charlie was unable to make payments on house so he and William moved across the street with daughter Thelma and husband Ralph Wright. 1936-1939 Charlie and William moved in with daughter Beulah and husband Newell Bankson and their children along with Marion and Glen. During this time he worked as a carpenter and bricklayer, built building on Dykeman and Parker Road. 1939 Charlie and sons William and Glen moved to small house on Pine Grove in Fort Gratiot, Michichgan, where he lived until he died in 1965. During this time he walked up to his daughter Beulah on State road, apx 1 mile and visited several days a week. He lived a very lonely life after Mabel died and missed her dearly. While visiting Beulah he would frequently ask his granddaughter Mary Ann to play 'The Lily of the Valley' on the piano: this was Mabel's favorite song. 3 Dec 1965 died in Port Huron, Michigan hospital after injuries as a result of being hit by car while walking home from visiting daughter Beulah." - Source: www.mundia.com (Internet: 12.10.2012; Daten von Harold R.
